Day 26

On Sunday, Lucas started taking milk through a pump. (30 ml of milk was pumped into his stomach during the course of 3 hours.) He tolerated this for two days. Today I was able to nurse Lucas for 5 minutes... then he got bored. Then I gave him some more of my milk in a bottle. I talked with three doctors today and they all gave me good reports about Lucas. It was a very happy day for me!

Three weeks!

Today the doctor told me that Lucas is looking "beautiful". She is confident that this time he will be able to digest the milk when he begins eating tomorrow or Monday.

Day 20

Yesterday, I wasn't able to go to the hospital again. My "Mommy Heart" just about broke last night after not seeing Lucas for 3 days. I didn't want him to think I had abandoned him! This morning soon after I got there he started crying and nothing would soothe him until I got him out of the incubator and held him. I think he missed me! The doctor says he is doing well. More exams will be done tomorrow to make sure everything is healing. And now we just have to wait (again!) and see how things progress.

Day 18

Last night, a little before midnight, a doctor called to inform us that Lucas was going to enter into surgery. The doctors went in and took out some scar tissue and cleaned out the intestines where they found some infection. They then closed up the hole above his bellybutton and made two other holes so that now both sections of the intestine that had been cut in the original surgery have an exit. This should help the doctors keep other infections away. We were not able to see Lucas today because we are still sick. But we went up and talked with the doctor and saw him through the window. He is already off the ventilator and was moving a lot. Please pray that I wake up without any cold symptoms... I am anxious to see my little Lucas!

For those of you who have been asking... I am very grateful to have my sister here taking care of Nate and the house. It is very nice to come home to a clean house and a warm meal after a day at the hospital! Also, my parents and brothers will be coming down at the end of July. We are hoping that Lucas will be home by then.

Day 16 and 17

Yesterday, Lucas was still spitting up his milk. While I was there they suspended his feedings. He was not happy about that! Today I woke up with a slight cold, so I couldn't visit Lucas. Manuel and I did go up to the hospital to drop off some clothes and diapers. We weren't able to talk to a doctor while we were there, but Manuel called this evening. The doctor said that they think the infection is in his intestines and that is why he can't hold the milk down. They increased his antibiotics and stopped feedings for the time being. Please pray that Manuel, Nate and I get over our colds and that Lucas gets over his infection.
